* اسمه ونسبه:
هو جندب بن جنادة بن سفيان بن عبيد بن حرام بن غفار، أحد السابقين الأولين، من نجباء أصحاب محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم.
كان أبو ذر رجلا يصيب، وكان شجاعا، ينفرد وحده، يقطع الطريق، ويغير على الصرم في عماية الصبح على ظهر فرسه أو قدميه كأنه السبع، فيطرق الحي، ويأخذ ما أخذ، ثم إن الله قذف في قلبه الإسلام، وسمع مقالة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم وهو يومئذ يدعو مختفيا، فأقبل يسأل عنه فكان خامس خمسة في الإسلام، ثم إنه رد إلى بلاد قومه، فأقام بها بأمر النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم له بذلك، فلما أن هاجر النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم هاجر إليه أبو ذر رضي الله عنه ولازمه، وجاهد معه، وقد شهد فتح بيت المقدس مع عمر.
وقيل: كان آدم، ضخما، جسيما، كث اللحية.
وكان رأسا في الزهد، والصدق، والعلم، والعمل، قوالا بالحق، لا تأخذه في الله لومة لائم، على حِدَّةٍ فيه.
عن أم طلق، قالت: دخلت على أبي ذر، فرأيته شعثا شاحبا، بيده صوف، قد جعل عودين، وهو يغزل بهما، فلم أر في بيته شيئا، فناولته شيئا من دقيق وسويق، فقال لي: أما ثوابك، فعلى الله.
وكان يفتي في خلافة أبي بكر، وعمر، وعثمان.

روى عنه: حذيفة بن أسيد الغفاري، وابن عباس، وأنس بن مالك، وابن عمر، وجبير بن نفير، وأبو مسلم الخولاني، وزيد بن وهب، وأبو الأسود الدئلي، وربعي بن حراش، وسعيد بن المسيب، وغيرهم.
* من مواقفه المشهورة:
عن ابن مسعود، قال: لما سار رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إلى تبوك، جعل لا يزال يتخلف الرجل. فيقولون: يا رسول الله تخلف فلان. فيقول: «دعوه، إن يكن فيه خير فسيلحقكم، وإن يكن غير ذلك فقد أراحكم الله منه». حتى قيل: يا رسول الله، تخلف أبو ذر، وأبطأ به بعيره.قال: وتلوم بعير أبي ذر، فلما أبطأ عليه أخذ متاعه، فجعله على ظهره، وخرج يتبع رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم. ونظر ناظر، فقال: إن هذا لرجل يمشي على الطريق! فقال رسول الله -صلى الله عليه وسلم-: «كن أبا ذر». فلما تأمله القوم، قالوا: هو -والله- أبو ذر! فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم:«رحم الله أبا ذر، يمشي وحده، ويموت وحده، ويبعث حده».فضرب الدهر من ضربه ، وسير أبو ذر إلى الربذة. فلما حضرته الوفاة أوصى امرأته غلامه، فقال: إذا مت فاغسلاني، وكفناني، وضعاني على الطريق، فأول ركب يمرون بكم فقولا: هذا أبو ذر. فلما مات فعلا به ذلك، فاطلع ركب، فما علموا به حتى كادت ركائبهم توطأ السرير. فإذا عبد الله بن مسعود في رهط من أهل الكوفة، فقال: ما هذا؟ قيل: جنازة أبي ذر. فاستهل ابن مسعود يبكي، وقال: صدق رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: «يرحم الله أبا ذر! يمشي وحده، ويموت وحده، ويبعث حده».فنزل، فوليه بنفسه، حتى أجنه.
وقيل: إن أبا ذر خلف بنتا له، فضمها عثمان إلى عياله.
قال الفلاس، والهيثم بن عدي، وغيرهما: مات سنة اثنتين وثلاثين.ويقال: مات في ذي الحجة. ويقال: إن ابن مسعود الذي دفنه عاش بعده نحوا من عشرة أيام -رضي الله عنهما.
